background

The team-operating model is based on three parameters:

• The teamwork is successful when the team members get along with each other (getting along / people)
• The team reaches results (getting ahead / results)
• The team agrees upon the direction of the team (getting aligned / direction).

When everyone in the team has a similar understanding of the team according to the three elements, there will be a high level of dedication. If not, it will have a negative effect on the team members’ dedication.

purpose

The purpose of this exercise is to give the team an overview of the balance between the three elements based on each team member’s perception of it. The balance between the three elements is the key to a great team process where the team works well together, solves tasks and where team members are committed to each other.

procedure

Each team member assesses the team by using the three elements. The assessment may be ranked from one – five, where five is best. Each team member shares how he or she has assessed the team. He or she explains the background for the evaluation.

At the end of the exercise, the facilitator (or one of the team members) sums up each evaluation. It is important that they take the time for dialogue about the results of the evaluations, and what it could mean for the team’s commitment and cooperation.

practical matters

It is important to introduce the exercise by explaining that there are no correct or incorrect answers. The exercise relies on the team members’ perception of the team. The exercise is completed by a short discussion of the learning outcome and future actions based on the exercise.
